Island Night Lizard: No longer threatened?

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed plans on Friday to remove the Island Night Lizard from its current listing as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

The proposal is based on successful recovery efforts removing invasive species from the three islands where Island Night Lizards are found: San Clemente, San Nicolas and Santa Barbara (all in the Channel Islands, CA).

In 2009, IC and partners began a project to protect the Island Night Lizard and other native species by removing feral cats from San Nicolas Island, California. This action, (plus other successful efforts to remove invasive species from islands where the Island Night Lizard’s occurs in the Channel Islands), has played an important role in the Island Night lizard’s recovery.

The de-listing of this rare species provides hope for island biodiversity elsewhere.
